The Dão region is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal, however for many years it has not been a well known region. In the 1940’s, the Portuguese government wanted to create a national identity for wine making outside of Port, and they focused in the Dão region with Touriga Nacional being the main grape. Touriga Nacional is often known for making big, red wines with dark red fruit, bold tannins, and large amounts of oak influence. Over the years, wineries in the Dão region have finessed this grape to showcase the fruit, smooth out the tannins, and create great wines that can compare to wines from other famous International regions.

Adega de Penalva is one of the leading wine cooperatives in the Dão region creating beautiful, fruitful, structured wines. The Indigena is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and Jaen (Mencia) — which are all hand harvested. This wine has a great balance of fruit, structure, and tannins that can be enjoyed now or cellared up to 2024. Serve this wine at 18 C.

This wine jumps out of the glass with lots of aromas. The dark red fruit stands out at first, with cherries and raspberries, followed by hints of leather and spices. There's a rich, compote-like quality to the fruit that suggests great ripeness and extraction.

Adega de Penalva's Indigena is a dry and medium bodied wine packed with flavour. The black cherry and raspberry fruit we found on the nose is on the palate as well, but it's a bit more jammy and rich. There are savoury hints of cedar, leather, warm baking spices and fresh-ground pepper.

This wine can be paired with beef stews, gamey meats, and hardy styled meals. This is a great option to try instead of a red from Côtes du Rhône.
