Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha
Alc. 14 %
If you've tasted any of Telmo Rodriguez's fantastic wines before (we featured his flagship Rioja from Bodegas Lanzaga last year), you'll understand why we were excited about Corriente's arrival in Canada. Rodriguez is without question one of Spain's top winemakers, championing indigenous grape varieties and emphasizing a sense of place in all of his wines.
The name pays tribute to a now-abandoned practice of labeling wines as either 'Corriente' (meaning common or everyday) or 'Selecto' (select). It's meant to celebrate the humbler joys of wine, and to represent the traditions of Rioja without any boastfulness or ostentation. Made from a traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha, and sourced from bush vines in the cooler Rioja Alavesa subregion, Corriente is delightfully straightforward and fruity, perfect for immediate enjoyment - any day of the week. Serve at about 18 C and enjoy over the next 3-4 years.
Rioja is known for bright red fruit aromas and Corriente doesn't disappoint. Ripe raspberry, cherry, and tart cranberry, along with a hint of pomegranate, are at the core of this wine. There's a complex savoury character as well, and notes of dry earth, cedar, and graphite.
Medium-bodied and dry, with elegant, dusty tannins and a silky mouthfeel. Red fruit is at the forefront again, with more cherry, raspberry, and a hint of rhubarb. Earthy notes close out the long finish, with more cedar, dry leaves and a faint herbaceousness.
Lamb and Rioja is the classic match, but this would pair beautifully with almost anything on the grill, especially easy weeknight staples like BBQ chicken or cheeseburgers.
