Journey's End Cape Doctor The Red

In 1995, the Gabb family, originally from the U.K., purchased their beautiful South African vineyard, nestled between the Schapenberg Hills and False Bay. The family is wholly committed to sustainably and ethically produced wines, with a philosophy of minimum intervention. They have a deep respect for the environment, and their farming practices are integrated as closely to nature as possible. They focus on creating top-quality wines that remain true to the terroir, while showcasing their own unique expression. Journey’s End converted to solar power in 2014 and the winery became fully Fair Trade Certified in 2017. This wine is named after the ‘Cape Doctor’, the cooling and cleansing south-easterly winds that blow through the vineyards, which assists in ripening the fruit, and helps to concentrate the flavours and balance out acidity. This wine is a Bordeaux-style red blend, consisting of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 17% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec, and is only produced in truly exceptional vintages. This wine should be served at 18 C. Cellar from now to 2030.

How it smells

At first blush, this boldly-scented wine shows an abundance of dark red fruit and plum, evolving into secondary notes of cassis, violets, cedar, fennel, eucalyptus, freshly ground black pepper, and subtle earthy aromas. There are also perceptible hints of fruit cake and dark chocolate.

How it tastes

This Bordeaux-style blend explodes on the palate with dark red fruit, well-structured tannins and fantastically firm acidity, which makes for a very balanced wine. An intense, complex, full-bodied red wine, it highlights flavours of black fruit you would expect to find, plus cassis, violets, liquorice, and ground black pepper — with a luscious and lingering finish. All you could ask for is another sip!

Recommended food pairing

Match this robust blend with red-wine braised short ribs, juicy steaks, grilled portobello mushroom; or try with butternut squash ravioli in a brown butter sauce.
