Great Southern, Australia
Alc. 14 %
Three Lions Chardonnay is made by Plantagenet Wines, a family-owned winery founded in 1968 in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The winery is named after their home shire of Plantagenet, which was itself named by early European settlers in honour the royal house that reigned in England from 1154 to 1485. Their Three Lions range takes inspiration from the royal family's coat of arms, which features three lions 'passant guardant.'
As winemaking pioneers in the Great Southern, Plantagenet has always strived to create wines that are faithful to both the grape varieties planted and the unique region in which they are grown. Though summers in the Great Southern can be hot, proximity to the ocean provides cool nighttime breezes that moderate growth and preserve acidity. As a result, Chardonnay made here can express the best of both worlds, with ripe tropical fruit and balanced acidity.
Enjoy this full-bodied Chardonnay at a cool 12 C now or over the next two years.
Ripe citrus and tropical fruit burst from the glass, with aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, peach, and pear. There's a lovely floral note of orange blossom, along with hints of oak aging in the form of smoke, butterscotch, and toast.
Three Lions Chardonnay displays great texture with loads of fruit: the grapefruit and peach notes from the nose are joined by a riot of tropical passionfruit and mango, along with orange and meyer lemon. Lees contact after fermentation lends weight and richness without it ever getting too heavy, and the finish is bright and fresh.
This Chardonnay is rich enough to stand up to roast poultry or pork, but has enough balanced acidity to complement pasta in cream sauce or lighter fish dishes.
