Profile

The Saint-Émilion is a key wine town in the Libournais district of Bordeaux, and is renowned as much for its beautiful buildings and scenery as it is for its wine. Its steep, narrow, cobbled streets, overlooked by its Romanesque church and the iconic 13th-century Tour du Roy tower are a reminder of the town's long history. Merlot makes up around two thirds of vines planted in and around Saint-Émilion, and continues to increase in popularity because of the softer, more approachable wine styles it produces.

For more than 80 years, the Union de Producteurs de Saint-Emillion (UDP) has been shaping its wines with a consistent standard for quality, thanks to recognized winemaking know-how and cutting edge technical advances. Even today, it is considered by its peers to be one of the major players in the region in terms of wine innovation, such as its 2003 investment in a gravity cellar made up of 141 stainless steel tanks, a technique unique to wine-making in Europe! Their co-operative is focused around three important values: passion, quality and responsibility.

This wine should be served at 18 C. Cellar from now to 2026.

Smell

This boldly-scented wine shows an abundance of dark black cherries, ripe black plums, blueberry, blackberry, leafy notes, and some oak. There are also subtle and pleasant hints of liquorice, earth, and leather.

Taste

This Bordeaux blend is dry and elegant on the palate, with dark red fruit, well-structured tannins and a nice acidity, which makes for a balanced wine. A complex and refined red wine, the palate highlights flavours of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, black plum, and dark chocolate, as well as some pleasant oak and leafy characteristics. There are mild dusty and stony mineral notes perceived as well.

Pairing

This is a Swiss-army wine - rich rib eyes, classy burgers, and roast duck. Even macaroni and cheese (with posh cheeses!) - it's a perfect everyday red!
