Profile

Swartland is an up and coming wine region located in the Western Cape that is making some fascinating South African wines. South Africa is a country that is categorized as 'New World', when it comes to wine, but has been producing wines since the 17th century. Spier, the winery, is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with a history dating back to 1692. The region's constant Atlantic Ocean breezes uphold the unique micro-climates, offering many advantages to its vineyards. The vast wheat fields in the area give the landscape a beautiful, golden touch during the summer. Spier is fair trade accredited, organically certified, and their environmental and social initiatives are many — including practices that reduce their water usage. Much of the water used in the winemaking process is recycled.

This wine is a blend of Shiraz, Cinsault, and Grenache, in the style of southern France, where the fruit is skillfully integrated with the spice characteristics, which makes for a lovely balance. This wine should be served at 18 C. Cellar from now to 2023.

Smell

The aroma of this blend displays exquisite notes of dark cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, and fig, which are complemented by spicy notes of white pepper, cinnamon, and dried fruit, such as raisins and dried spices. There is a fruit cake character to the nose on this wine!

Taste

This blend is full-bodied and warm, yet elegant, with velvety tannins that harmonize very well with the fine, mature acid. The youthful berries of dark cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant also dominate the palate, but the finely spiced flavours can also be perceived here. The finish is multi-layered with a good length.

Pairing

This blend would pair nicely with the bold flavours of char-grilled piri-piri chicken, or served with a grilled vegetable flatbread as a delicious starter.
