Sonoma appeals to a wide swath of wine lovers as it has so much to offer. Although it is twice the physical size as Napa Valley, it produces only about half the amount of wine, but prides itself on its exceptional quality. The area has a laid-back vibe and down-to-earth attitude, and the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine enthusiasts for their friendliness and approachability.
This wine is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Petite Sirah, and the fruit is sourced from the Dry Creek and Russian River valleys, which helps to create a complex and multi-layered flavour profile. This wine should be served at 18 C and can be cellared from now to 2025.
This wine opens with a medium+ intensity where it showcases a black cherry bouquet with hints of red currant, dried walnuts, liquorice, toasty oak, vanilla, and cocoa. The aroma layers are soft and well integrated.
On the palate, this wine is silky and sophisticated, with medium body - it is beautifully balanced. The flavour profile is a tasty blend of black cherry, red currant, raspberry, and strawberry, with notes of minerality. Also detected is a blend of cedar, dark chocolate, and spiced cake. The finish is dry and its moderate sticky tannins show very nice length.
This Merlot would pair very well with braised short ribs, grilled portobello mushrooms, gourmet burgers, or roasted vegetables.
