We love wines from France's Loire Valley at WineCollective, and this Anjou-Villages Brissac from Château la Varière is a new favourite! The Château itself dates back to the 15th century, when wealthy French nobles flocked to the Loire as a summertime escape from Paris. Grape cultivation has a long and proud history here, and today, reds from the Loire run the gamut from light, elegant wines made from Pinot and Gamay all the way up to robust, structured reds made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Anjou is known more for the latter, and in the case of this Vielle Vignes ("old vines") Anjou-Villages from Château la Varière, it's a blend of both grapes - Cabernet Sauvignon grown on more gravel-dominant soil, and Cabernet Franc sourced from plots with a higher chalk content. The careful pairing of grape and site is a particular emphasis for Château la Varière, and the results speak for themselves, resulting in a complex, nuanced red.

Enjoy over the next 5 years at about 18 C.

Juicy red fruit dominates the nose, with aromas of ripe raspberries, blackberries and cherries. The Cabernet Franc lends it trademark brambly aromas to the blend, with hints of forest floor, fresh herbs and sweet tobacco.

Ripe and approachable on the palate, with fresh berry flavours and bright, refreshing acidity. The tannins are developed and fine, leading to an elegant finish with flavours of mixed berry compote, dry herbs, and dusty earth. While this is delicious now, it would reward another few years in the cellar.

Grilled pork tenderloin with plum chutney would be a perfect match for this red, or for a vegetarian option, pair with baked eggs with faro and mushrooms.
