If the whimsical label of this fresh, vibrant white from Portugal looks familiar, it might be because we featured a red blend from this producer way back in 2014! Made by Vidigal Wines, the Porta 6 Branco hails from the wine region around Lisbon that until recently was known as Estremadura. Since it is a mostly coastal region, winds from the Atlantic play a major factor in grapegrowing, and the cooling influence means that white grapes ripen slowly and retain high levels of acidity. Like the majority of wines from this area, the Porta 6 Branco is a blend of indigenous grapes that are little-known outside of Portugal - Fernão Pires (also known as Maria Gomes), Arinto, and Moscatel. Fernão Pires provides the main fruit component to the blend, while Arinto adds crisp acidity, lemon notes and an ability to age. Finally, the Moscatel, as part of the very large family of Muscat grapes, adds a distinct floral note. The result is a delicious, dry white that is far greater than the sum of its parts!

Enjoy now and over the next year at a well-chilled 8 C.

Porta 6 Branco opens with plenty of ripe, summery fruit - peaches and pears, followed by honeydew melon and hints of candied lemon. There's also a slight floral note and a faint underlying minerality that adds complexity and interest.

The fruit from the nose follows through on the fresh, medium-weight palate, with peaches & cream, lemon, lime, and Granny Smith apples. The approachable, moderate acidity adds some zip, but is very well integrated.

Enjoy this pleasant, balanced white on its own, or match with summery appetizers like prosciutto-wrapped melon or fritto misto.
