The Merayo family has been growing grapes in the DO of Bierzo, in the northwest of Spain, for generations. In fact, much of Pedro Merayo’s 25 hectares of ancient vines were inherited from his father. Pedro's immaculate vineyards are the envy of other well-known local producers. Some are even using pictures of Pedro’s vineyards on their own websites, as they are that pristine.
All grapes are hand picked and are handled with great care in the vineyard, as well as in the winery. This particular wine is made from grapes from 60 year old bush vines as well as grapes from younger vines, resulting in an average vine age of about 20 years. Older vines produce lower grape yields which results in wines with great concentration and complexity.
The family is very committed to the environment - all of their wines are produced using only their own grapes, utilizing sustainable agriculture and viticulture. Enjoy this wine served at 18 C, from now until 2026.
This red has all the fresh, perfumed characteristics and ripe red fruit that are typical of wines made from the Mencia grape. This wine has an intense and fresh bouquet, with aromas of cherry, blueberry, floral (violet) notes along with some earthy mushroom notes.
This wine is medium-bodied, with powerful and sweet fruit on the palate. The tannins are smooth and rounded, as the berries found on the nose make a reappearance here. There are a lot of ripe fruit flavours like raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, and cassis, along with some floral and spicy notes. The wine is well balanced, with a long and pleasant finish.
This would be a great pairing with cured or grilled meat. Hearty vegetable dishes, such as a mushroom risotto, would also be delicious.
