Manchuela

14 Alcohol

Introduction

Manchuela is Spain’s newest DO (Designation of Origin). It is located southeast of Madrid in a valley between the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. The DO occupies 75,000 hectares of land under vine, where the limestone-based clay soils from the sediment of the two rivers are a repository for the fallen rainwater. The vineyards are located at heights between 600 and 1100m. The shifts in temperature between the heat of the day and the cool of the evening, along with a Mediterranean breeze, allow the grapes to ripen slowly and retain their freshness and acidity. The winery was founded in 1973 and is family-owned and operated, using organic farming practices. It has selected the oldest and highest quality vineyards in the area to produce their beautiful wines - some are up to 80 years old. Serve this wine at 18 C, from now until 2026.

How it looks

How it smells

The aromas predominantly express ripe, red fruit. The bouquet shows off cherry, ripe strawberry, raspberry, plum, and cranberry, along with some notes of blueberry. There are some lovely hints of summery violet.

How it tastes

This Spanish take on the northern Rhône Syrah grape has a velvety quality on the tongue; it features ripe flavours of red cherry, blackberry, strawberry, cranberry, and rhubarb. The wine is medium-bodied with a medium, juicy acidity and some nice, grippy tannins. The flavours linger for a while, followed up by a fresh and elegant finish.

Recommended food pairing

The bold flavours of this wine would pair well with cumin spiced, slow-roasted barbecue pork. A good vegetarian option would be a smoked seitan steak.
