The region of Paso Robles is located south of Napa Valley and its wines are very different in style to those that would be found in Napa. There are over 200 wineries in the region, having grown from a mere 30 in 2001. This wine region has been called the ‘wild west’ by some, due to its rule-breaking reputation and innovative spirit.

The Pacific Ocean has a major influence on the vineyards here. The area possesses the largest temperature fluctuations in all of California. The days can climb to 38 C and the nights can dip down to 5 C. The extreme daytime heat creates fruit that is dark and bold, with brooding flavours, while the freezing nights help the grapes retain their racy acidity.

This wine is a blend of: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petite Verdot, 10% Petite Sirah

The Big Red label is an eye-catching reproduction of Antonio Tempesa’s 1565 depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon. The new slogan, prominently emblazoned on the back label, is a whimsical and epic invitation to “Slay It”. Enjoy this wine at 18 C, from now until 2024.


On the nose are some seriously dramatic aromas of ripe fruits, like blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, and plum, along with a sprinkling of cocoa and some savoury/spicy notes of pepper, clove, and dusty pencil shavings.


There is absolutely nothing subtle about this wine - this is a full-bodied wine that is super ripe, exploding with dense fruit. At the first sip, it hits the taste buds with intense, dark berries and black cherry, along with some dark chocolate, vanilla, and spice. There are also some savoury flavours of tar and dried herbs. The finish possesses a glycerin-like texture.


This big, bold blend just screams to be paired with a juicy, rare slice of prime rib. Paired with sticky ribs, fresh off the grill, would also be delicious.
