Trimbach Sélection de Vieilles Vignes

Trimbach Sélection de Vieilles Vignes

Alsace, France

Alc. 13.5 %

Alsace is one of France's most picturesque wine regions - and that's saying something! Situated in the country's north-eastern corner, tucked between the Vosges mountains to the west and neighbouring Germany to the east, it's full of charming villages of flower-bedecked, half-timbered houses and rolling hills of vines. It's also one of France's most atypical wine regions; it's the only area that labels wines by grape variety rather than by region, so it's easy to navigate the sometime baroque-looking labels. It's also unique in its emphasis on dry white wines and is home to some of the best dry Rieslings in the world.

The Trimbach estate dates back to 1626, and is now helmed by Pierre Trimbach, the 12th generation of his illustrious family. While Trimbach produces wines from all the major grape varieties of Alsace, the focus is on dry Riesling. This bottling, their Sélection de Vieilles Vignes (selection of old vines), is extremely rare, and produced in only the finest vintages. We're thrilled to be sharing this with WineCollective members, and no, the aging recommendations are not a mistake - this really can be cellared for decades!

Enjoy at about 10 C over the next thirty-odd years.

Alsace in a glass, with bruised apple, fresh lemon, and plenty of signature smoky minerality, reminiscent of wet slate. It's tightly wound at the moment, but will age beautifully, and the subtle notes of honeycomb and white flowers. This is an extraordinary wine!

Bone-dry and vibrant on the palate, with tightly-focused acidity. Concentrated flavours of granny smith apple, quince, nectarine, and lemon run through this beautifully-textured wine, and the finish is long and harmonious. Delicious now, but will drink well for decades.

Enjoy on its own to let the wine shine, or match with a roasted pork loin, or a traditional Alsatian Flammekueche (tarte flambée).
