Bairrada is one of Portugal’s most important wine DOCs, but it is still relatively unknown, even though it has been making wine since Roman times. The region is situated in northern Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean, in the region of Beiras. With the proximity to the ocean, the grape vines benefit greatly, as the sunshine allows for ripening, while the breezes coming off the ocean ensure enough acidity and freshness in the wine. The region is currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance and making better quality wines by reducing the typically mass-produced yields, de-stemming grapes to reduce the harsh tannins, and ageing wines in French oak to create balance.
A. Henriques has been a family-owned operation since their founding by Adriano Henriques in 1943. This wine is a blend of Baga, Touriga Nacional, and Merlot. The local Baga grape is very popular in this region, making up approximately 75% of the red wines made here. Baga produces wines that are deeply-coloured, rich, complex, and fruity/floral.
