Profile

Smell

The nose on this wine wafts up from the glass as black cherries, blackberries, black plums, creme de cassis, vanilla, and notes of mint, licorice, bay leaf, leather, and smoke. There is a lot going on in this fragrant wine!

Taste

This blend, from the up-and-coming wine region of Bairrada, is a complex, full-bodied wine, expressing flavours of blackberries, black cherries, vanilla, and florals. This blend of Touriga Nacional, Baga, and Merlot is smooth and ripe. The tannins are soft and there is enough acidity to keep the wine fresh and balanced.

Pairing

A tapas platter would work really well alongside this Portuguese blend. A chicken piri-piri would be another delicious option.

Aromas and Flavours

Black Currant

Sometimes also referred to as 'cassis', this black fruit tasting note is common in red wines.

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Jam

Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).

Tobacco

The smell of a freshly rolled cigar, slightly sweet, and earthy - just like Grandpa's hugs.

Vanilla

A sweet spice aroma that indicates oak-ageing - think vanilla bean frappuccino!

Description

Bairrada is one of Portugal’s most important wine DOCs, but it is still relatively unknown, even though it has been making wine since Roman times. The region is situated in northern Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean, in the region of Beiras. With the proximity to the ocean, the grape vines benefit greatly, as the sunshine allows for ripening, while the breezes coming off the ocean ensure enough acidity and freshness in the wine. The region is currently enjoying a bit of a renaissance and making better quality wines by reducing the typically mass-produced yields, de-stemming grapes to reduce the harsh tannins, and ageing wines in French oak to create balance.

A. Henriques has been a family-owned operation since their founding by Adriano Henriques in 1943. This wine is a blend of Baga, Touriga Nacional, and Merlot. The local Baga grape is very popular in this region, making up approximately 75% of the red wines made here. Baga produces wines that are deeply-coloured, rich, complex, and fruity/floral.

Drink now at 18 C, or cellar until 2026.
