We're always on the hunt for interesting, lesser-known grape varieties at WineCollective, and this Roter Veltliner from Weingut Josef Fritz caught our attention immediately! Thought to be an ancient grape variety native to Austria, there's currently only about 200 hectares planted in its home country, mostly around Josef Fritz's home region of the Wagram. Family owned and operated since its founding in 1912, Weingut Josef Fritz has made it their mission to champion this rare grape and express its full potential.

Josef himself has always loved Roter Veltliner, so when he took over ownership of the family business in 2003, it was an easy decision to devote their attention to it. Capable of producing a dizzying array of styles, from refreshing table wines to fuller, extract-rich examples, all the way to sweet wines, it's easy to see how a passionate grape-grower like Josef Fritz could make it their life's work.

Enjoy this intense, complex white at about 10 C and cellar for up to a decade.

The nose is all about mineral-driven freshness and energetic intensity, with aromas of fresh lime, wet slate, white blossoms, and green apple. There's a richer hint of white peach, and an intriguing hint of sea spray and fragrant herbs.

Medium bodied and bright, with fairly pronounced acidity on the long finish. There's some weight to the palate, but the acidity keeps it brisk and refreshing. More orchard fruit flavours appear as well, with apple peel, pear, and under-ripe nectarine. The minerality is on full show as well on the briny, tart finish that would shine with food.

Though it might sound unexpected, white wines from Austria are a delicious match for Asian flavours - try with soy-braised cabbage and crispy spring rolls.
