Vin de Pays de Vaucluse, France

Alc. 14 %

New Vintage! This wine was previously featured in the store, but is back by popular demand!

Looking at the label, it might be difficult to know right off the bat where this wine is coming from. Let us help! 'Vin de Pays' essentially means 'wine of the land' and is the French equivalent to the more broadly used IGP classification. Vaucluse itself, is located in southeastern France in the heart of the Southern Rhône Valley. Other, more widely known, wines from the Southern Rhône Valley include Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône.

The Vaucluse area ranges from alluvial (meaning a deposit of sand and mud that was formed by flowing water) lands in the West to mountain peaks in the East. Primarily a Mediterranean climate, there are plenty of hours of sunshine that are mitigated by the cooler northwestern wind. This fluctuation between warm and cool allows for slow and even ripening of grapes throughout the region. The 2016 vintage represents an ideal growing season in Southern Rhone Valley. One which Wine Spectator praised as a "truly rare vintage". Drink now or save up to 4 years and serve at 15 C.

Allow for a few extra minutes for this wine to sit in the glass to really open up. A little shy at first, we were pleasantly surprised by the fruit-forward nose with fresh red currant and berry fruits that greeted us. There's also a slightly jammy note that mingles with dried flowers and leather undertones.

Young, fresh, and juicy red berries glide onto the palette leaving behind any jammy suggestions found on the nose. Lighter-bodied with a medium acidity, the soft tannins leave us wanting more through the lengthy finish. A touch of baking spices intermingle with a slight wet slate quality and hints of leather. Altogether a graceful and captivating expression of wines from the Southern Rhône, we are sure this will not disappoint!

Perfectly suited to grilled meats like poultry, duck, or wild boar. Or, indulge in your favourite pasta with a tomato sauce and a goat cheese garnish.
