Louis Honig purchased a 68-acre ranch in Rutherford, which is in the heart of the Napa Valley. Early on he sold off his grapes to local wineries but Louis dreamed of the day he could retire from his San Francisco advertising agency job and make wine at his vineyard. Sadly, he didn’t realize that dream, as he passed away before that could happen. He willed the estate to his family, and in 1980, as a tribute to his legacy, his family produced a few hundred cases of Louis Honig Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard’s old tractor barn. After the wine won a Gold Medal at the Orange County Fair, the family decided to increase production, and Honig Vineyard & Winery was officially born.
Louis’ grandson, Michael took over the winery, at the tender age of 22. What began as a small “garage” winery is now a thriving family endeavour. The winery is solar powered and the winemakers even use Golden Retriever ‘sniffer dogs’ to guard against the threat of mealybugs. A happy outcome of their sustainable farming is a plentiful amount of bees. They even make their own honey at the winery!
Enjoy this wine chilled at 8 C, from now until 2023.
