Uva Non Grata, a play on the phrase persona non grata, is a project that highlights the "unwelcome" grapes (or uva) of France. But Gamay? Unwelcome? Since its surge in popularity thanks largely to the light, quaffable reds of Beaujolais Nouveau, it's hard to imagine a time when it wasn't practically ubiquitous. But so hated was Gamay by Duke of Burgundy Philippe the Bold that in 1395, he went so far as to outlaw its cultivation in favour of the more "noble" Pinot Noir! Thankfully, cooler heads have since prevailed, and the grape survived.
Fast-forward 600+ years, and Gamay is now grown extensively and loved around the world. It's capable of thriving in a variety of climates, and it produces a wide range of wines from simple, bubble-gum-like Beaujolais Nouveau to seriously flavourful Cru Beaujolais and everything in between. Grapes for this wine were sourced from vineyards just north-west of Lyon, and picked early to maintain their refreshing acidity. Enjoy at a cool 14 C over the next few years.
