Valpolicella, the baby brother to rich, raisiny Amarone, comes from Veneto in northeastern Italy. It's made from the same blend of local red grapes (Corvina, Rondinella, and Corvinone), but rather than drying them on straw mats before pressing as they do for Amarone, the grapes are pressed and fermented right after harvest. The resulting wine is much fresher and lighter than Amarone, but shares similar fruit flavours.
The Vallena property has been owned by successive generations of the same family since its purchase in 1832. Modern winemaking at the estate dates back to the late 1960s, when most of the current vines were planted by Gianfranco Tomezzoli, the father of current owner Riccardo Tomezzoli Tantini. Riccardo's daughter Rachele has since joined the family business, and is carrying on the Vallena tradition of quality-focused, artisanal winemaking.
Enjoy this fresh, vibrant Valpolicella at about 16 C over the next three years.
