Profile

The wines of Domaine de Castelnau capture the essence of the south of France - charming, complex, and expressive examples of great French wine grapes. Their estate-grown Syrah is no exception. Thanks to the reliably warmer climate of the Pays d'Oc, Syrah from this region can achieve perfect ripeness, all while staying balanced thanks to the savoury herbaceousness so typical of the south of France. If you're a fan of new-world Syrah, especially Australian Shiraz, this is a great introduction to a more old-world style. This 2020 bottling won a bronze medal at Decanter Magazine's World Wine Awards, and one sip will show you why it was so highly acclaimed.

Pays d'Oc is a hotbed of exciting wines at the moment, combining centuries of grape-growing expertise with an enterprising, creative spirit. The diversity of grapes and soils, combined with a broadly warm, dry, climate, have drawn ambitious winemakers from elsewhere in France and around the world. Domaine de Castelnau's Syrah is a fantastic example of the level of quality possible from this dynamic region.

Enjoy at 18 C over the next 3-5 years.

Smell

Notes of cherry, blackberry, and red plum waft from the glass, backed by Syrah's signature peppery spice. Here, it's more fresh-ground white pepper, and it's joined by savoury dried herbs like rosemary and sage. There's some liquorice here as well, along with hints of cocoa powder and violets.

Taste

Full bodied and plush on the palate, this unoaked Syrah has great freshness and energy. The flavours are mostly in the red-fruit realm, with plenty of cherry and currant, but there's an intriguing undertone of cinnamon, pepper, and herbs. The finish is long and firm, with enough tannin to suggest it will age nicely for another 3-5 years.

Pairing

Sweet and sticky Korean-style short ribs would be a great match for this red, or serve with spicy southwestern-style potato salad or a hearty chilli.
