Boavida comes to us from Quinta Dona Matilde, one of the oldest properties in Portugal's Douro region, recognized as early as the 18th century as part of the world's first officially-protected demarcations of origin. It's been owned by the Barros family for four generations since it was purchased by Manoel Moreira de Barros in 1927. Ideally situated on the banks of the Douro river, the estate's focus has been on producing high-quality expressions of the region's indigenous grapes.
While the grapes in this blend might not be immediately familiar, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, and Tinto Cao (try saying those three times fast!) are staples in this part of Portugal, and are the foundation of fortified Port wine. As a result, dry table wines from this region often share similar aromatic qualities to Port without the sweetness and elevated alcohol. Boavida (which translates to "good life") is a perfect example, and a great introduction to the dry wines of the Douro.
Serve at about 18 C and enjoy over the next 2-3 years.
Rich fruit aromatics are the star of the show here, with blackberry, blueberry compote, and black plum leading the way. There's a hint of sweet baking spices like cloves and cinnamon, along with a bit of tobacco, licorice and dried leaves.
Full bodied and plush on the palate, with loads more fresh fruit supported by smooth, alluring tannins. Flavours of blackberry, currant and cherry mingle with notes of cedar and balsamic, and the finish is long and dry. Despite all the boisterous fruit, it's never cloying, with just enough acidity to keep things fresh.
Go bold, and pair the soft tannins of Boavida with the big flavours of Tex-Mex favourites like cheese enchiladas or chili con carne.
