Profile

Smell

A quick swirl reveals intense aromatics, with dried cherries, fresh figs, and blackberries leading the way. There's a distinctive spice note as well, along with dried herbs and a hint of campfire smoke.

Taste

Montepulciano is known for its fuller body and high tannins, and this example is no exception! The palate leans more towards fresh rather than dried fruit flavours, and there's loads of structure to support it. Flavours of ripe cherry and blackberry lead to a long finish with dusty tannins. The acidity is very well balanced, and keeps the wine lively throughout.

Pairing

Versatile with red meat, Barba's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo pairs beautifully with anything grilled or smoked, from a classic burger to beef brisket.

Aromas and Flavours

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Fig

Reminiscent of coconut, figs have a slight grassiness to them and a hint of sweet spice.

Herbs

Your windowsill herb garden gives off a lovely herbal smell every time you walk by.

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Smoke

Reminds you of singing songs by the campfire on a beautiful summer evening.

Description

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (not to be confused with the similarly-named Vino Nobile di Montepulciano) is one of central Italy's great red wines. Sourced from the mountainous namesake region of Abruzzo, the grape produces distinctively aromatic, structured reds that pair beautifully with the area's food. Fratelli Barba is owned by the three Barba brothers: Giovanni, Domenico, and Vicenzo, whose family history can be traced back over 600 years to their move to Abruzzo from Naples. Their Montepulciano d'Abruzzo comes from an organically-farmed 10 hectare vineyard in the heart of the Colline Teramane DOCG. Hand harvesting, careful fruit handling, spontaneous fermentation, and extended lees contact combine to give this wine great complexity. Enjoy over the next 3 years at about 18 C.
