Eagle-eyed WineCollective members might recognize the name of this historic cooperative, since we featured a Rosso Beneventano from Cantina di Solopaca earlier this year. Solopaca is a traditional grower's cooperative, in which members pool their harvests to make wine under a single label. Their Rosso Beneventano was a huge hit, so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to showcase one of their rarer, limited production wines: their Sannio Riserva. Made exclusively from Aglianico, Southern Italy's star red grape shines in this bold, full-bodied red.

The ancient Aglianico grape is the star of Campania, and on its own it produces intensely-coloured, tannic, and highly acidic reds with incredible capacity to age. Long neglected by fine-wine consumers, it's finally beginning to get the recognition it deserves as one of Italy's most distinctive reds. Drink this outstanding example at about 18 C over the next 4-5 years, and if possible decant before serving!

Rich, heady aromas of blackberry, black plum, and berry compote drift from the glass of this inky red. With a few swirls, notes of toasty oak, vanilla, and baking spices emerge, along with dusty earth and tobacco.

Full bodied and dense on the palate, with chewy, youthful tannins. Aglianico's signature brooding, dark fruit flavours are in abundance here, along with focused acidity and plenty of grip. We'd recommend decanting this if enjoying young, but don't be afraid to cellar for a few years if you have the patience - this has more than enough structure to go the distance!

Pair the robust flavours of this Aglianico with equally hearty meals like pasta in ragu, Osso Buco, or spicy grilled sausages.
