Bordeaux lovers rejoice! We've found another gem exclusively for WineCollective members, this time from a historic estate in Lalande-de Pomerol, on Bordeaux's right bank. Château Vieux Cardinal Lafaurie dates back to the 12th century, and their flagship red is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc vines on the estate were initially planted so that the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who build a hospice here to care for pilgrims, could make wine for mass. The vineyards today cover just 6 hectares, with about two-thirds planted to Merlot.
After harvest, the grapes undergo a maceration period of about 2-3 weeks, followed by fermentation, in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to 100% French oak barrels, about half of which are renewed annually. The resulting wine is classically structured, with tannins that will easily support at least another 5-8 years of aging. Enjoy at 18 C, preferably after about an hour in a decanter.
