Castello Romitòro

Fans of Italian wine will likely already be familiar with Castello Romitorio, which has produced outstanding Brunello di Montalcino from the historic 12th-century fortress of the same name since artist Sandro Chia purchased the estate in 1984. Chia, an artist, initially transformed the old manor house into his home and art studio. When he realized how well the land was suited to winegrowing, he immediately began the project of restoring vineyards and linking the property's present life to its ancient heritage. In addition to focusing on now-classic expressions of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, the estate also produces Romitòro, which is their take on a Super-Tuscan. It's a blend of estate-grown Syrah and Petit Verdot, aged for at least 12 months in oak and bottled unfiltered. Like Sandro Chia's art that graces the Estate's labels, it's bold, vibrant and unmistakably Italian! Enjoy over the next 10 years at about 18 C.

How it looks

How it smells

Aromatic cherry, plum and black raspberry are at the fore, with hints of mocha and cigar. A savoury quality presented along with cured meat, smoke, and spice lending some rusticity to the polished fruit.

How it tastes

Dense and full-bodied, with loads of ripe red and black fruit to balance the impressive tannic structure. It's grippy without being overpowering, the overall impression being all about the plush, soft fruit. The finish is dry and long with an intriguing savoury, brambly note.

Recommended food pairing

Pair this structured red with rich dishes like lamb stew or hearty roasted root vegetables served over polenta. It's a perfect winter red to match with hearty comfort food!
