This wine takes some time to fully open up, but it has an invigorating nose with raspberry, cranberry, fresh herbs, some flint and a hint of smoke. That typical Sicilian-ness!


The wine’s refreshing acidity is the first thing that stands out – this is an absolute food-friendly wine. Forest fruits dominate on the palate, with earthy undertones. With relatively low alcohol and tannin levels, this wine is best slightly chilled. A great summer wine for die-hard red wine drinkers.


Match this bright, rustic red with anything from a blistered cherry tomato bruschetta to pan-roasted spicy sausages and peppers. A light tomato-based pasta sauce would hit the spot as well.

Sicilian wines are finally getting the international recognition they deserve, and we couldn't be happier about it! The island off the toe of Italy, long considered to produce workmanlike but rarely exciting wines, is in the midst of a quality renaissance. Recognition of the island's unique volcanic soils, and the unmistakable character of the resulting wine, has sparked an explosion of investment and a renewed focus on quality.

Scio Rosso comes from Cantina Europa, one of the island's most historic and important cooperatives. Its 2,100 members grow grapes over 6,000 hectares in the provinces Trapani, Agrigento, and Palermo. The rolling hills are perfect for grape-growing, with plenty of sun and ventilation from the sea breezes. The cooperative members pool their harvests, and under the watchful eye of a dedicated team of winemakers, Syrah and Nerello Mascalese are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks before being blended. The final wine is elegant and bright, a wine that lends itself perfectly to food. Enjoy over the next year or two, and serve at 16 ºC.
