Dominio del Plata is a new project from trailblazing Argentinian winemaker Susana Balbo, whose name will likely be familiar to longtime WineCollective members: we feature her Crios Red Blend way back in 2019! We've been long-time fans of her wines, which perfectly capture the intensity and balance possible from high-elevation fruit. Her journey has been an extraordinary one, as well: in 1981, she graduated with a degree in oenology, the first woman in Argentina to do so. After a stint at Michel Torino heading up the development of Torrontes, Susana worked as consultant winemaker at many international wineries, before returning to Argentina to open her eponymous winery in 1999. In 2018, The Drinks Business magazine named her to their list of the world's 10 most influential women in wine.
The winery is located in the town of Agrelo, in Luján de Cuyo, the heart of Mendoza's famous grape-growing region. The altitude of the vineyards is critical in maintaining freshness in the finished wines, a hallmark of Susana Balbo's various wines. Nuscaa is a young, fresh expression of Malbec, and should be enjoyed over the next two years at about 18 C.
Malbec's obvious charms are on full display in this lively red, with aromas of crushed blackberries, blueberries, fruit jam, and bramble. Behind the fruit, there's a slight leafy herbaceousness that provides some contrast and tension, along with notes of fresh herbs and a touch of vanilla.
Dense and layered on the palate, Nuscaa opens with loads of ripe blue and black fruit. The texture is round and plush, and the tannins are polished and refined. This is built for early enjoyment, and possesses enough peppy acidity to balance the ripe fruit and soft texture.
Match this malbec with pub staples like a bacon cheeseburger or vegetarian chili - the bold flavours will be a perfect compliment.
