Smell

Rich red-berry fruit are at the core of this appealing Bourgueil, with hints of raspberry jam, ripe strawberry, and cranberry. Notes of vanilla and baking spice from oak aging compliment the fruit, and there's just a hint of Cabernet Franc's signature leafiness, along with dried herbs and spice.

Taste

Full bodied and structured on the palate, with deep, rich flavours of red fruit. The tannins are fine and grainy, and the acidity is nice and punchy, balancing the robust mouthfeel. The balance on the long, dry finish is exceptional, and there are echoes of dried herbs and coffee. Delicious and complex, this is Cabernet Franc at its best!

Pairing

Contrast this wine's nervy energy with earthy, gamey flavours, and pair with roast duck or a rustic mushroom and onion tart.

Description

This is the second wine we selected from brothers Bertrand and Vincent Marchesseau, who took over their family's winery in 2001. Their small estate consists of plots in Chinon, St Nicolas de Bourgueil, and Bourgueil, which is where this Roc Collection is from. One of the Loire Valley's most celebrated sub-regions, Bourgueil is located just west of Tours, and produces exclusively red wines made primarily from Cabernet Franc, known locally as Cabernet Breton.

Roc Collection comes from an organically-certified vineyard planted on a hillside vineyard with clay-limestone soils. The vines average 60 years old, and after the grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation takes place naturally, with a long maceration on skins. The finished wine is aged in French oak before being bottled and further aged in the winery's traditional cellars. It's a beautifully complex example of one of the Loire's most famous red wines, and should be served at about 12 C and enjoyed over the next 3-4 years.
