Vianney Castan wasn’t born in the vineyards, nor did he inherit a winery. Yet, he has winemaking in his blood. His great-grandfather Joseph Castan founded a modest winery in 1907 and went on to produce award-winning wines in the southern French region of Languedoc. Until misfortune hit: in 1956, France was hit by an extreme cold snap that completely wiped out the vineyards – an event the winery never recovered from. Fast forward to 100 years later. Inspired by the stories of his grandfather and father, Vianney Castan and his wife Emilie decided to pick up where Joseph left off. Naming the company after his great-grandfather, Vianney set out to produce great wine from lesser-known appellations in southern France.
The grapes for this Sauvignon Blanc grow on clay-limestone soils mixed with sands. The warmer climate of southern France produces different aromatics in the grape than cooler French regions such as the Loire – a bit more fruity, but still with green undertones. Serve at 10 ºC –12 ºC and enjoy until 2023.
