Profile

Smell

Rich and fruity on the nose, with aromas of blueberry pie filling, crushed blackberries, and black plum. Earthy notes of dry leaves, along with a hint of black tea, begin to emerge with air. Spices like fennel and clove add nuance and depth to the ripe fruit.

Taste

Firm tannins provide ample structure for all the appealing fruit flavours (more blueberry and blackberry), and the acidity is surprisingly fresh given the region's hot summers. It's dense and layered on the palate, suggesting it would continue to evolve nicely in the cellar, provided you have the patience to wait!

Pairing

This is a great weeknight red, and will pair perfectly with burgers, sausage on a bun, or your favourite delivery pizza.

Aromas and Flavours

Blueberry

Eating handfuls of berries straight from the bush, your fingers stained purple for days to come.

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Jam

Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).

Leaf

When was the last time you raked up all the leaves in your yard and jumped in the pile?

Tea

A warm cup of Earl grey tea - with floral scents and slightly earthy notes.

Description

Las Reñas is an organically-farmed Monastrell from a winery called Bodegas del Rosario. It's located in Bullas, a rugged sub-region of Murcia, in southeast Spain. This is the heartland of Monastrell, which is one of the country's most important native grapes, and which accounts for nearly 85% of the region's vineyards. While Bullas only received D.O. (Denominación de Origen) status in the mid-1990s, history of grape-growing and winemaking in the area dates back an estimated (and astonishing!) 3,000 years.

The region's blazing hot summers and low rainfall, coupled with higher elevations and well-draining soil, create a climate that is perfect for Monastrell. Grape skins naturally thicken and darken to reduce the harmful effects of the hot sun, which results in wines of great concentration and aromatic intensity. Worth decanting when young, this wine will cellar nicely for another 2-3 years, and should be served at about 16 C.
