Brugnano is a small family-owned winery located in north-western Sicily and run by brothers Francesco and Giuseppe Brugnano. Their tiny (less than 4 acres!) farm is planted primarily to native grape varieties, through which Sicily's unique viticultural environment can be expressed. The island's wines are enjoying an upsurge in interest and popularity recently, so if you're new to Sicilian wines, this is a great time to dive in and explore! And we can think of no better place to start than Nero d'Avola, Sicily's most important grape variety.
Named after the town of Avola (the grape's name translates to "black of Avola") on the southern end of the island, Nero d'Avola draws frequent comparisons to Shiraz for its ripe, sweet tannins and distinct peppery notes. This example from Brugnano's V90 range is unoaked, allowing the character of the grape to shine. Serve this juicy, full-bodied red at about 18 C and enjoy over the next 3-5 years.
