Ripe red and black fruit are the star of the show in this aromatic red, with plenty of cherry, red and black currant, and ripe raspberry. There's a spicy element at play as well, with hints of clove, fresh-cracked black pepper, and a hint of cinnamon, along with a slight minerality reminiscent of crushed gravel.
The abundance of red fruit shows on the soft, open palate of this red, with flavours of bing cherry, blackberry, and raspberry. The tannins are well-rounded and approachable, making this as enjoyable to drink on its own as it is to pair with food. Lifted acidity, thanks to the region's cooler climate, contributes balance and freshness to the juicy finish.
Pair Anzol's juicy, fruit-forward freshness with spice-forward dishes like Piri-Piri chicken, Jamaican jerk pork, or a vegetable curry.
Juicy dark berries picked straight from the bush, with a subtle hint of leaf and earthiness.
Tangy or sweet, juicy or tart: more sophisticated than a strawberry, but just as lush.
Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).
Think of the holidays - a warm and woody spice found in your favourite baked goodies.
A whiff of a freshly used pepper grinder - spicy and fresh, without the itchy nose.
2022 - 2025
If you're a fan of full-bodied, fruit-driven reds, Portugal should be one of your go-to countries when you're looking for wine. If you're not yet a convert, may we introduce you to Anzol, our latest find from the seemingly inexhaustible supply of fantastic Portuguese reds. It's made by a fourth-generation, family-owned winery called Caves da Montanha in Portugal's Bairrada region, in the small town of Anadia. The region is historically known for producing high-quality sparkling wines, but their reds have been something of a well-kept industry secret, and are worth seeking out!
Anzol is a blend, and like many Portuguese reds, it highlights indigenous grape varieties that you're unlikely to see anywhere else. In this case, it's a blend of four of the Douro's most important grapes: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Roriz (Portugal's name for Tempranillo). Combined, these grapes create a full-bodied, plush red wine that will be a great alternative to new-world red blends. Enjoy over the next three years at 18 ºC.
