Familiar Tinto is made by Real Companhia Velha, which can trace its history as far back as 1764, making it the oldest continuously operating winery in Portugal! Owned and operated by the Silva Reis family since 1960, the winery remains focussed on producing both port and table wines of the highest possible quality. Their Familiar Tinto is sourced from vineyards in the Lisboa region, which until 2009 was called Estremadura. Stretching northwards along the Atlantic coast from the city of Lisbon, the region produces everything from white and sparkling wines in the north and northwest, to full-bodied reds further inland.
Familiar Tinto is made from a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Aragonês, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Castelão - grapes which (with the exception of Cabernet Sauvignon) might not be familiar at all! Portugal, like most grape-growing countries in Europe, is home to a wide variety of fascinating indigenous grapes, but the main thing to remember is that the wines are delicious! This unoaked blend is the perfect weeknight wine, made for early enjoyment, so serve over the next 3-4 years at about 16℃.
