Profile

Smell

Beautifully fragrant with rich floral hibiscus and sage aromas, this wine is ripe with character and a cinnamon and nutmeg spiciness, followed by a hint of sweet tobacco and rooibos.

Taste

An incredible depth of flavour, this wine kicks off with red raspberry and strawberry, leading into more subtle dark fruit plum, bramble and blueberry. The Primitivo leaves a lasting finish with hints of vanilla and butterscotch.

Pairing

Pair with Spaghetti Bolognese, bacon-wrapped tenderloin, smoked Gouda cheese or fire-roasted red peppers and tomatoes.

Aromas and Flavours

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Bramble

Juicy dark berries picked straight from the bush, with a subtle hint of leaf and earthiness.

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Jam

Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).

Fig

Reminiscent of coconut, figs have a slight grassiness to them and a hint of sweet spice.

Description

Made by three generations of family winemakers starting in 1910 when the De Cerchio family's great-grandfather Vincenzo purchased the land. The De Cerchio family tended the vines before the Second World War wiped them out, leaving the family in a financial crisis but they refused to give up their land. Laurentino De Cerchio, the son-in-law of Vincenzo, fought in the Italian army and was captured by the invading Nazi army and taken as a prisoner being forced to Germany and then on to Poland. When he was able to escape at the end of the war in 1947, he put all of his devotion into rebuilding his family's winery and produced and bottled their family's first wine since the war was over in 1961. Since then he expanded operations, bought more land and made wines that paid tribute to Italy's native grape varieties. Today the winery is managed by Laurentino's grandson and fourth-generation winemaker Federico De Cerchio who is dedicated to carrying out his grandfather's mission to make wines of superior quality. Drink now or in several years from now at a temperature of 18 C.
