Paddy Borthwick is a small, family-owned estate located in Gladstone, in the heart of Wairarapa on New Zealand's North Island. While the region is known for a variety of grapes and wine styles, it's their Pinot Noirs that have come to the fore as their flagship reds. The region's warm days and cool nights make it a perfect place to grow Pinot, and growers here have shown that they can produce wines with a distinctive character and style that oftens seems to straddle the Old World and the New.
Paddy established his winery in 1996, with a focus on Pinot Noir for his red wines. 10 hectares of the farm are planted to 8 different clones of the grape, and all plots are harvested separately, allowing for maximum control during blending. Fermentation takes place with wild yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel before being aged in primarily neutral French oak barrels. Enjoy this concentrated, expressive example of Pinot Noir at about 16 ℃ over the next five years.
