Gascony (Gascogne in French) is a rare outlier among wine regions in the southwest of France in that it mainly produces white wines. The area's most famed export, Armagnac, holds the answer to this mystery: since Armagnac is made from white grapes, it's only natural that the region's table wines are as well! There are eight white grapes in total permitted in the region, with most wines being a blend of at least two. In the case of Domaine Denis Tastet's Trinquet, the blend is Colombard and Gros Manseng. Plots are harvested and vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel before being blended together to create the final wine.
Denis Tastet's vineyards have been in his family for over a century, and he now holds 62 acres of land in the Gers, in the heart of Gascony. Farming is done in accordance with a method called lutte raisonnée (or "reasoned fight"), avoiding the use of any chemicals in the vineyard unless deemed absolutely necessary, and prioritizing organic methods and overall vineyard sustainability. This wine should be enjoyed now or over the next two years and served at a well-chilled 8 °C.
