Profile

Smell

Candied cherry and raspberry dominate on the nose of this light red, with hints of crunchy pomegranate seeds and tart cranberry. There's a slight herbaceousness that lingers in the background, along with notes of fresh herbs and dried leaves.

Taste

This captures all the charm and elegance of cool-climate Pinot Noir: bright red fruit flavours, soft tannins, and a refreshing pop of acidity. Served lightly chilled, this is a perfect red for hotter weather, but be forewarned: wines this delicious tend to disappear fast!

Pairing

Pair this light-bodied red with grilled pork chops or cedar-planked salmon, or match with BBQ chicken thighs.

Aromas and Flavours

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Pomegranate

The scent of pomegranate is subtle, but has a distinct sweet-tart and 'winey' flavour.

Raspberry

Tangy or sweet, juicy or tart: more sophisticated than a strawberry, but just as lush.

Cranberry

Sweet and tart, just like the cranberry sauce at your family's Thanksgiving table.

Bramble

Juicy dark berries picked straight from the bush, with a subtle hint of leaf and earthiness.

Description

Weingut Balthasar Ress was founded in 1870 in the village of Hattenheim, in Germany's Rheingau region. Originally conceived of as a guesthouse for weary travellers, it soon became apparent that fine winemaking was the path to take. Now headed by Balthasar's great- great- grandson Christian Ress, the winery proudly carries on the family's traditions while embracing new ideas. In 2016, Christian led the estate through the rigorous process of becoming fully organically certified, making Ress the first winery of its size in the state of Hesse to convert to organic winemaking.

Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder in German) has long been an important grape in Germany, although it's often overshadowed by the nation's star grape, Riesling. While the Rheingau's cool climate makes ripening most red grapes a real challenge, thin-skinned Pinot Noir can thrive, and produces wines that are marked by freshness and elegance. This fruit-forward example is best enjoyed lightly chilled (about 14 °C) over the next 2-3 years.
