Smell

Concentrated red and black fruit aromas emerge from this intensely-coloured red, with notes of mixed berry jam, black currants, and spice. There's a faint floral note, as well, reminiscent of dried violets.

Taste

Medium-bodied and compact on the palate, with juicy blue and red fruit flavours. It's glossy and fresh, with rounded tannins and elegant acidity, no small feat in a region this warm. The finish is pure and dry, with a hint of wood smoke and dusty earth.

Pairing

Monastrell and BBQ are a match made in heaven, so pair the juicy red and black fruit flavours of this wine with spicy BBQ ribs, or try it with baked pasta with chorizo.

Description

In the Olympics of Spain's indigenous red grape varieties, Monastrell would definitely earn a medal, but likely behind Tempranillo and Garnacha's undeniable Gold and Silver finishes. Thankfully we don't need to pick favourites, and can appreciate all three cultivars for their unique characteristics, of which Monastrell has many! Though it's grown in southern France (where it's called Mourvedre, and usually blended with Syrah and Grenache), this grape's ancestral home is in the dry, elevated plateau of central and southeastern Spain. Here, in a region with relentless sun, sandy soils, and scant rainfall, Monastrell thrives, and produces distinct, intensely-flavoured reds. The team at Ego Bodegas are Monastrell wizards, and source the fruit for this Talento Ecologico from organically-certified vineyards that are an average of 25 years old. Enjoy this vibrant expression of Monastrell at about 18 C over the next two years.
