Profile

Smell

Gentle citrus notes of grapefruit pith and lime waft from the glass of this brilliant white, followed by aromas of crunchy Granny Smith apple, wet stone, and even a faint saltiness reminiscent of sea spray. There's hints of dried herbs and white blossom that add depth.

Taste

Almost ethereal on the palate, with a beautifully delicate texture, this is an amazing combination of elegance and intensity. Flavours of citrus and tart apple abound, but the acid is rounded slightly by age, and the finish is characterized by notes of green papaya, gunflint, and stone.

Pairing

Seafood is a natural match, but switch it up and try this with some classic fried chicken or your favourite Thai takeout - this would be perfect with an aromatic green curry!

Aromas and Flavours

Grapefruit

As refreshing as aromas come, the smell of grapefruit is purely invigorating.

Lemon-lime

Common in cool climate white wines, this aroma can range from fresh citrus to lemon zest.

Apple

From Granny Smith to Red Delicious, apple makes for a delightfully crisp aroma.

Stone

Remember playing with pebbles as a child and giving them a lick out of curiosity?

Leaf

When was the last time you raked up all the leaves in your yard and jumped in the pile?

Description

Vinho Verde, Portugal's most famous style of white wine, has been undergoing a quiet renaissance. Long thought of as a simple, lightly fizzy wine to be enjoyed poolside or at the beach in large volumes, there's been an undercurrent of producers who have been working tireless to establish the style as a more serious, ageworthy white. One such producer is Ravasquiera, a third-generation, family-owned winery based in Alentejo. Their Altis Vinho Verde is made from a blend of traditional Vinho Verde grapes Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadoura, but unlike many commercial examples, there's no spritz to the finished wine. Instead, it's completely still and quite complex, dominated by mineral notes and bright citrus aromas. Enjoy this serious (and seriously delicious) white at a well-chilled 6 C over the next two years.
