It's back! Torre Zambra's Colle Maggio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo was a WineCollective fan favourite when we first shared it, so we couldn't resist the opportunity to snap up this new vintage when it arrived in Canada. If you missed it the first time around, you're in for a treat! The De Cerchio family have been stewards of this land since great-grandfather Vincenzo left his native Naples in 1910 to purchase a small plot set around a lookout tower (the Torre of the winery's name) from the Zambra family. He planted the first Montepulciano and Trebbiano vines on gently rolling hillsides, and farmed here until the Second World War ravaged the landscape and the vineyards. It wasn't until Vincenzo's son in law, Laurentino De Cerchio, was released by his Nazi captors in 1947 that the family estate was rebuilt and wine production began anew.
Fourth-generation Federico De Cerchio now helms this venerable estate, and has carried on the tradition of quality set into motion over 100 years ago by his great-grandfather. This Montepulciano perfectly captures the intersection of tradition and modernity, and should be enjoyed at about 18 C over the next 5-7 years.
