This is probably the most serious Verdicchio we've had the pleasure of tasting at WineCollective, so we couldn't wait to share it with members the moment it arrived in Canada! Verdicchio has a documented history in the region of Marche, in central Italy, that dates back to at least the 14th Century. Though it's thought to originate in Veneto in the north (where it's called Trebbiano), Verdicchio's long-established reputation in Marche make it the region's signature white grape.
La Monacesca take Verdicchio's importance very seriously, specializing primarily in three expressions of the grape. Their Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva D.O.C.G. Riserva 'Mirum' is sourced from a small, 3 hectare vineyard with an average vine age of 30 years. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested after extended hang-time, and gently pressed before being fermented in stainless steel. Long aging on fine lees adds texture and depth while the wine undergoes malolactic conversion. While delicious now, this complex white could easily age gracefully for another ten years. Enjoy at about 10 C.
