Profile

Smell

Unmistakably Bordeaux on the nose, with heaps of blackcurrant, blackberry, and a distinctive smoky, mineral note. With air, more fruit emerges in the form of red plum and cherry, along with vanilla bean, black tea, and graphite.

Taste

Still quite youthful on the palate, this full-bodied Bordeaux showcases flavours of blue and black fruit, spice, and smoke. The robust tannins are fine-grained and well integrated, and the balanced acidity follows through on the long, dry finish.

Pairing

Match the structured earthiness and bold fruit characteristics of this Bordeaux with beef stew or oven-roasted lamb.

Aromas and Flavours

Black currant

Sometimes also referred to as 'cassis', this black fruit tasting note is common in red wines.

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Vanilla

A sweet spice aroma that indicates oak-ageing - think vanilla bean frappuccino!

Plum

Sweet, fruity and sensual, similar stone fruit aromas to a peach, but without the 'fuzziness'.

Graphite

The smell of the first day of school with your brand new freshly sharpened HB pencil.

Description

Château La Cardonne's history stretches back over three hundred years, but the first written evidence appears in 1769. It achieved modern fame in 1973, when it was purchased Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), who invested heavily in both the vineyards and the cellars. Further investment occured in 1990 when the Château was purchased by Cuy Charloux, a longtime admirer of the estate's wines. Winemaking is currently helmed by former Château Lynch-Bages winemaker Magali Guyon, who joined the team in 2000. Her vision and experience led to the estate being reclassified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2018. Classically-structured and built to age, the 2016 vintage from this historic property is the estate's usual blend of roughly 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. We'd recommend decanting this wine in the short term, but it will cellar beautifully for a further decade. Serve at 18 C.
