Profile

Description

Bobal, trying saying that five times. Bobal is one of those under-the-radar varietals from Spain that almost no one recognizes. It's a dark-skinned varietal native to Utiel-Requena in the southeastern part of Spain. Although it is relatively obscure, it is one of Spain's most planted grapes. These wines are dense and chewy with expressions of chocolate and dried berries. Usually used as a blending grape, nowadays you see more and more made as single varietal wines. These wines often hail from high-altitude vineyards. High acidity is a benchmark of this grape as well like Tannat that gives deep intense colour and a good tannic structure. The name of the grape is derived from the Latin word Bovale which means bull. You can also find Bobal planted over the border in the Rousillon region of France. Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce Clos Lojen is a prominent biodynamic producer located in the Manchuela region. Their wines often appear in Wine-Searcher's Top 10 Best Value Wines. This wine comes from vines that are between 40-60 years of age and it spent 7 months in French oak barrels foudres.

Pairing

Pair this wine with Valencian paella, semi-firm cheeses, roasted nuts, and a leg of lamb.

Aromas and Flavours

Chocolate

From milk to dark chocolate, this aroma is irresistible, just like that bar hidden in your drawer.

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Blueberry

Eating handfuls of berries straight from the bush, your fingers stained purple for days to come.

Raspberry

Tangy or sweet, juicy or tart: more sophisticated than a strawberry, but just as lush.

Licorice

Childhood memories of fighting over the black Jujubes, or avoiding them altogether...
