Mula Velha Reserva
Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Syrah
The moment you stick your nose in the glass, you’re immediately intrigued. An interesting mix of blackberry, coffee, and plum with some pepper, vanilla and just a bit of smoke. The wine reveals liquorice and chocolate notes as it starts opening up in the glass.
After such a perfumed nose, the taste can sometimes be a let-down, but not in this case: the wine is bold and full of character. Aromas of ripe blackberries, spices and vanilla return, the peppery note is even more apparent on the palate. Its acidity makes you want to have another sip and the silky tannins make for easy drinking.
Try with carne asada or carnitas for a satisfying match. If you’d like to keep it Portuguese, try caçoila, or Portuguese stewed beef that is ultra comforting.
Aromas and Flavours
Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!
Sometimes also referred to as 'cassis', this black fruit tasting note is common in red wines.
Sweet, fruity and sensual, similar stone fruit aromas to a peach, but without the 'fuzziness'.
A whiff of a freshly used pepper grinder - spicy and fresh, without the itchy nose.
Inhale deeply as your favourite morning aroma returns in your evening drink of choice.
Handling and Serving
2022 - 2026
Every time we come across a wine like this, we're more convinced that Portugal has a treasure trove of amazing wines that are ready to take the world by storm. Not only is their quality consistently high, they also provide incredible value for money. This Reserva is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Shiraz and Touriga Nacional, grown in the wine region Lisboa. Formerly called Estremadura, it stretches north from the capital of Lisbon along the coast. Known for its variety of reliefs and microclimates, wineries closer to the coast are more affected by the Atlantic, while those inland are warmer. “Mula Velha” is an “old mule,” and this doesn’t just refer to the industrious agricultural helper! It is also a Portuguese expression for a wise and experienced person who doesn’t let himself get tricked. In a way, that’s true for this wine: it’s made by people who clearly know what they are doing. It promises what it delivers. This full-bodied Reserva is fermented in stainless steel vats, and aged for three months in wood. Serve it at 18 ºC and drink between now and 2026.
