Profile

Description

Mencia is grown almost exclusively in Bierzo, which is a very small denomination in Spain. Almost all of the vineyards are tended to by hand and most are very very old. Mencia can be fresh and fruit-driven when made in a youthful style and can be big, complex, and intense made to age given the right terroir. Earthy and bold in nature, bursting with red fruit, intense barnyard aromas, and a savouriness that reminds some of the tang tartness of Sangiovese. Balanced acidity and bold tannins can come into play. The winery was founded in 1940 by a Valencian who fell in love with Bierzo and in 2002 got a revival by a new team who saw potential in the vineyards sites. The winemaker is the young and up and coming (and very dynamic!) Adelino Perez Gil. The wine is produced from vineyards at an altitude of 450-700 m and comes from 46-year-old vines in the heart of Bierzo.

Pairing

Liver pâté, roasted mushroom pizza, and vegetarian phyllo shepherd's pie.

Aromas and Flavours

Earth

Reminiscent of playing in the fresh dirt as a child, that black earth rolling around your fingers. Damp, woodsy, balsam.

Mushroom

Savoury, earthy, hints of black dirt, umami

Bramble

Juicy dark berries picked straight from the bush, with a subtle hint of leaf and earthiness.

Cranberry

Sweet and tart, just like the cranberry sauce at your family's Thanksgiving table.

Leather

Ever gotten into a car with leather seats, or taken a big whiff of your dad's leather jacket?
