Profile

Description

Jan-Hendrik Joubert and his family began Baleia with the dream of creating wines that conveyed the unique aspects of their vineyards, which are located in the remote Cape South Coast region of Vermaaklikheid. Nestled between the Langeberg mountains to the north and St. Sebastian Bay to the south, Baleia's limestone-rich soils and distinct microclimate produce wines of exceptional finesse and elegance. Limestone Debate's name is a cheeky reference to the famous affinity that Chardonnay has for limestone-rich soils, and the insistence by some that it's a prerequisite for making world-class Chardonnays. Though the debate over the qualitative impact that limestone has rages on, it's worth noting that high pH soils like limestone do tend to produce lower pH grapes, which make wines with refreshingly high acidity. But you don't need a degree in geology or soil sciences to appreciate a delicious wine, so let the limestone debate carry on as you enjoy this delicious, complex Chardonnay. Serve at about 12 C and enjoy over the next 5 years.

Roast poultry would be an excellent match for this flavourful Chardonnay, or match with grilled salmon with lemon butter or herbed pork chops.
