Profile

Description

It's increasingly difficult to find excellent value in the world of Californian wine, especially for the state's signature red grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. Enter Gearbox: a label that might be familiar to longtime WineCollective members, as we've featured both their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the past. As with those two fan-favourites, fruit for their Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from top vineyards throughout California, resulting in a wine that displays a consistent house style and excellent varietal character. The name is a tribute to early 20th century motorcycles, which had gearboxes often referred to as a "jockey shifters". Riders had to take their hand off the handlebar in a risky maneuver to switch gears. This was a unique technique that required skill and is reminiscent of the way these wines are made. The winemaker uses unique techniques combined with skill to craft the perfect wine. Enjoy over the next 3-4 years at a temperature of about 18 ºC.

Pairing

Open this for simple one-pot weeknight meals like Italian sausages with peppers and onions or pulled pork sandwiches.

Aromas and Flavours

Black currant

Sometimes also referred to as 'cassis', this black fruit tasting note is common in red wines.

Jam

Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).

Strawberry

A sweet, almost caramel-like aroma reminiscent of your favourite juicy, red berry.

Plum

Sweet, fruity and sensual, similar stone fruit aromas to a peach, but without the 'fuzziness'.

Vanilla

A sweet spice aroma that indicates oak-ageing - think vanilla bean frappuccino!
