Profile

Description

Though often overshadowed by Nebbiolo and the world-famous Barolo and Barbaresco it makes, Barbera is arguably one of Italy's great food wines, and thanks to its more prestigious neighbour hogging the limelight, it's often one of the countries best bang-for-your-buck values. We were understandably excited to discover this stunning Barbera d'Alba from Mauro Molino, a small winery located in La Morra. A native to the Langhe, Mauro returned to his roots in 1979 when his father left him the vineyard land that would become the foundation of his winery. His children Matteo and Martina joined the family business in the 2000s, injecting fresh ideas and a new focus on environmental sustainability. Their Barbera d'Alba is a vibrant expression of the style, and should be enjoyed over the next 5 years at about 18 C.

Pairing

Barbera is one of Italy's great food wines, and this example would be fantastic paired with a rustic flatbread with spicy fennel-heavy sausage.

Aromas and Flavours

Blackberry

A little sweet, a little tart, this black fruit is rather quiet but persistent.

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Fig

Reminiscent of coconut, figs have a slight grassiness to them and a hint of sweet spice.

Leaf

When was the last time you raked up all the leaves in your yard and jumped in the pile?

Smoke

Reminds you of singing songs by the campfire on a beautiful summer evening.
