Profile

Smell

Tempranillo is known for bright red berry aromas, and examples from Portugal are no exception: Flor d'Penalva red explodes from the glass with notes of tart cherry, field strawberry, and raspberry. Jaen and Touriga Nacional add depth and weight, and there's a hint of oak aging in the form of warm spice and cedar.

Taste

Juicy and balanced on the fuller-bodied palate, this is a crowd-pleaser: there's just enough fruit for fans of new-world powerhouse reds and an undercurrent of earthy savouriness that will charm old-world wine lovers. The finish is long and pure, with a stony minerality that adds complexity to the bright fruit and punchy spice.

Pairing

Pair with a charcuterie board overflowing with aged cheeses, cured meat and briny olives, or match with herb-roasted pork loin.

Aromas and Flavours

Strawberry

A sweet, almost caramel-like aroma reminiscent of your favourite juicy, red berry.

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Herbs

Your windowsill herb garden gives off a lovely herbal smell every time you walk by.

Nutmeg-cloves

Think of the holidays - a warm and woody spice found in your favourite baked goodies.

Cedar-oak

An intriguing mix of clove, sandalwood and resin - the smell of your favourite wooded trail.

Description

Portuguese wines are truly having a moment in the international spotlight, and we couldn't be more excited about the quality and diversity of the offerings we've been tasting. Our latest finds are the Flor d'Penalva blends from Adega de Penalva, located in Dão, Portugal's oldest wine region. Just south of the famous Douro Valley (the homeland of Port), Dão enjoys a temperate climate that allows for even ripening of a wide variety of grapes. Flor d'Penalva's red is a blend of Tinta Roriz (Spain's Tempranillo), Jaen (AKA Mencia), and Touriga Nacional. Though the cooperative has grown considerably since its inception in 1960, Adega de Penalva remains focussed on creating benchmark expressions of the Dão, and this blend is a wonderful example. If you're new to Portugal's fantastic dry reds, this will offer an intriguing peak at what else the country can produce. Serve at about 18 C and enjoy over the next 3 years.
