Profile

Description

The Sociedade Agricola Quinta de Santa Eugénia, which was created in 1996 is located in the Cima Corgo-one of the three Douro sub-regions in Portugal. The company was established in 1996, however the Quinta has been producing wines for over three generations from the same family that farms and works the lands. They own a total set of eight vineyards which are all slightly over two hectares each. The estate is very well known for producing high quality wines in a variety of styles (port, dry, and sparkling) and are made from the traditional grapes that you would find in this region. The terraced estate has soil that transitions between schist and granite. Grown at an altitude of 430m-465m, the varieties they produce are Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão, Tinta Amarela, and Touriga Franca. The diversity of the soils and the warm climate allow the grapes to fully ripen over a long hot summer, and the combination can be attributed to the powerful finesse that is showcased in their reserve wines. The estate produces two labels: Chão da Portela and Rapa Lobos. The wines are produced using a mix of traditional methods combined with more modern techniques in order to preserve freshness of fruit and complexity of character.

Pairing

Braised beef with mixed mushrooms, elk burgers, roasted vegetable lasagna.

Aromas and Flavours

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Raspberry

Tangy or sweet, juicy or tart: more sophisticated than a strawberry, but just as lush.

Mint

A touch of sweet and cooling herbal flavours, think gum, but without the intense menthol

Jam

Spreading grandma's homemade jam on your morning toast (yes, the bread was homemade too).

Licorice

Childhood memories of fighting over the black Jujubes, or avoiding them altogether...
